About

The single inspiration that lead to the establishment of Hatsuhana was nothing more than the desire to serve unsurpassed sushi and sashimi to New Yorkers. Nearly three decades later, the mission remains unchanged. Obsessive attention to detail should be the norm for sushi restaurants, not something to strive for. The complexity associated with creating the ideal sushi rice, the fragrance of freshly ground wasabi, fresh fish from around the globe and understanding the proper crispiness and consistency of roasted nori seaweed are just a fraction of capturing the essence of sushi. A true sushi restaurant must also prioritize intangible ingredients such as dedication, passion, liveliness and heart. Hatsuhana has come to realize that during recent years, it is a rarity to find a "no gimmicks, no frills" approach to sushi. This restaurant salutes the centuries-old methods used by the prominent sushi shops and chefs of Japan. Hatsuhana's philosophy is that authenticity and supreme quality should never be compromised, nor will it go out of style. Loyal patrons seem to agree that this establishment serves the finest, freshest and simplest sushi around!

  • We were looking for moderately-priced sushi in New York City within walking distance of Grand Central Station and found Hatsuhana. In addition, we wanted a restaurant that allowed you to choose your own sushi, rather than just having an omakase experience. The service at this restaurant was impeccable. I ordered their signature "dream box" and the presentation was beautiful. They asked me in advance if there was any particular sushi I didn't like, and, since I told them I wasn't fond of uni, they swapped it for a wonderful king salmon. Overall, I'd recommend this restaurant if you are also looking for moderately-priced sushi in New York City.
